Introducing Zoho Share: Sharepoint Meets YouTube

Many of you have used our applications to create, share and publish content. While you've had control on the creation part and the sharing part, there was little visibility on the published content. The documents you published are a list of URLs. We plan to change that with our new addition to Zoho Suite - Zoho Share.

Our vision for Zoho Share is Sharepoint meets YouTube: the business benefits of organizational document repositories, presented for the YouTube generation, with a friendly, familiar interface.

The Sharepoint part is very important: Zoho Share is a central place where we bring together all published content. If you are an individual publishing your documents, the content appears in Zoho Share under your profile. Zoho Business users have an option to publish the documents within the organization. In this case Zoho Share acts as a published document repository within (and only within) the organization. The analogy here is an organization's internal Sharepoint repository, but with YouTube style enhancements.

Zoho Share is about content that is published and the people who publish it. All the public content from Zoho Writer, Sheet & Show can now be viewed in Zoho Share. You can browse through various documents, presentations, spreadsheets and PDFs under the Content section of Zoho Share. These different types of documents can be viewed in different modes. You can Comment, Rate, Bookmark, Email and Embed the content from Zoho Share.

The following video provides a quick overview of the application.

One of the unique functionality of Zoho Share is the ability to define a license for the content you upload/publish. Users can also view the content by the license type.

Under the People Section, Zoho Chat is integrated into Zoho Share to facilitate interaction between content creators and content consumers. 'My Area' section lets you view all your documents from Writer, Sheet & Show.

Currently documents published with Zoho Writer, Sheet & Show will appear in Zoho Share. Other content will follow. Going forward, we will also add the ability to publish documents directly to Zoho Share from other Zoho Apps.

Please note that only published documents will be listed under Zoho Share. Any shared documents will continue to remain private. If you wish to remove any public documents, please do so from the 'My Area' section in Zoho Share or the appropriate Zoho applications.

Please do give this a try and let us know what you think.

(Update: Reviews at TechCrunch, Webware, Mashable, ...

Many reviewers think of it as "YouTube for documents" which Scribd & Docstoc have popularized. We view Zoho Share more of as "Sharepoint Meets YouTube" or "Sharepoint for the YouTube generation" which is a key difference. In keeping with it, we have avoided too much Flash (!) and kept the players as simple HTML/Javascript. It is an intentional design choice.)

  1. SharePoint + YouTube? Does that mean it will have painfully awkward usability + racist trolls commenting on everything we post?

  3. Can ZhohShare be used yet to only publish documents to a ZohoBusiness group? This ability could go a long way to enable ZohoBusiness users to operate their business (or nonprofit, or classroom etc) faster and simpler and make Zoho more desirable.

  5. I would like to draw your attention to # that we recently launched.
It allows instant co-browsing on any document, something like a collaborative Zoho share.

I have found it. You guys are so totally barking up the right tree. AS allays a few bugs will need be ironed out, look at them as waves on a calming pond soon to be still waters in a league all of your own. "Look out Microwho?"I am starting a Non-profit that uniquely shares ideal principals with your company. I believe a collaborative effort on our behalf is a must! I have creative insight that coupled with your DB...

  9. Jim,Thanks for your compliments. Option for uploading multiple files would be provided soon. As of now, the files uploaded is made public. Soon, we would provide the option to upload private files also. Thanks once again.

  11. First off...thanks for continuing to bring out such great products! You are making my business life easier. Two points about Zoho Share:1) Is there a way to select multiple files to be uploaded?2) Once a file is selected for upload, I would like to be able to select Public or Private before the upload begins. Unless I'm mistaken I have to go back in and edit sharing once the file is uploaded. Thanks, Jim

  13. Rick, Hugo,
Private sharing is the first item on our plate right now. It is being worked on as part of organization/group settings being rolled out across Zoho. Stay tuned. We fully recognize the classroom need, we are on it.Thanks,

  15. First, congratulations!I like to suggest widening share options. I would like to create "private groups" and have the option to share docs only with them (that is, docs that are public just for group members). For example, if I am working with 5 clients, I want to create a group for each one, and share specific docs with them. Of course, each group will have different docs and members. If such a thing can be done, it will be great.Hugo Sanchez

  17. I like the idea of Zoho Share. I am a university professor and would consider using Zoho Share for sharing course related materials. I need to be able to keep the course materials "private" for use by my students rather than the materials being available to the world. This need is driven partly by the limited-use copyright laws that make it possible for classroom use of copyrighted materials. At present you have only two categories of accounts (i.e., individual and company). Would you be willing to create a third account category that would work for classroom use? Thanks for the consideration.Rick Lillie

  21. There doesn't seem to any visual indicator of whether a doc is public or private.Perhaps there could be an all files, private files, and public files links on the left for navigational convenienceAn All tab in the my files view could be useful as well (and could be a logical default on page refresh)

  23. I would join up ... except I need the ability to co-mingle my Zoho documents with other documents. If I could put them up in PDF format, that would be a win-win. Cheers.
